Is Technology Impacting The Way We Communicate?

Technology is all around us; phones, computers, tablets, the list could go on forever. These devices impact our lives a lot, especially the way we communicate with others.

As you can see in the timeline above the way we communicate has come a long way.  From smoke signals to mobile phones, the goal of communication has not changed, we still want to communicate a message. Technology has influenced the way we communicate massively, by using electronic device. By using these devices; computers, tablets and smartphones, we are able communicate instantaneously with other people.

But is the impact of technology on communication only having positive outcomes? Sherry Turkle, a highly acclaimed professor at MIT , has spent the last 30 years researching the psychology of people’s relationships with technology. In 2012 she conducted a TED talk on how technology is redefining how we communicate with each other.  She states the devices that we have in our lives ‘don’t only change what we do, they change who we are’ (Sherry Turkle, 2012). She addresses the negative and positive aspects of how we use technology to communicate. The full video can be watched below.

Technology has positively influenced the way that I communicate with friends and family that live around the world. We are able to send messages and call each other whenever we like. It has made keeping in touch easier and we are able to update each other on what is happening without having to wait to see each other in person.

Week 3 – Introduction

Part 1

Hi guys,

This is my second term using this blog, I did a Media Writing class last year and the blog was our main assessment. I will change the tabs around so there will be an option to click on this class or the other…

I am currently in second term of my first year of a Bachelor of Digital Media. With the course Professional Communication I hope to broaden my communication skills. Having worked in the hospitality industry for the past six years I know how important communication between employees is, and how miscommunication can often be disastrous.

Part 2

Our unit coordinator, Lyn Costigan made our orientation video engaging and explained everything in a manner that was relatable and understandable. The orientation video was concise, and covered everything from the weekly lessons to how the forums work. Lyn explained that the course put an emphasis on research, referencing, writing, speaking clearly and knowing what mediums to use. These skills will be used not only at University, but in the workplace as well. It is important to have a copy of the text book either the e-text or hard copy, it is required for tasks and assessments. Lyn suggested that students should check their emails regularly and log into the moodle site each week to go through the weekly tasks and watch presentations. The orientation video then went on to explain the different forums and what to use them for.

I received feedback from my tutor, Aaron, and he suggested that I work on my grammatical errors and punctuation.

I also noticed a couple of errors with style and punctuation that we can work on in class.

I also noticed a couple of grammatical errors. Remember to read over your work, again and again and again.

Throughout the past six weeks, I have been proofreading my work a lot more. And therefore picking up mistakes that I usually would have missed. I have enjoyed using a blog (for the first time) for an course, as I think it shows a journey throughout the term.

Inquiry: Week 11

What are the problems with the article? 

The structure of the news article is repetitive and clearly out-of-order. Throughout the article it is evident that the article may have been updated, but with no time stamps it is hard to tell.

Does it meet the guidelines for reporting self-harm? 

Mind Frame says ‘the media has an important role to play in shaping and reinforcing social attitudes towards, and perceptions of, suicide and mental illness.’

It is recommended that pages should limit promo on of public memorials, including online memorial pages. Because inadvertently pages should not reinforce suicide as a desired outcome for people at risk of suicide.

Reporters should try and reduce the prominence of the story. This is based on research suggesting stories of self-harm attract the attention of people vulnerable to act in the same way, increasing their risk of attempts.

 

I believe that the article has met the guidelines for reporting self-harm.

Technical: Complete Quiz 8 – Figures

Chapter 11 of Wynford Hicks focused on figures. The chapter discusses that being numerate is just as important as being literate.

On completing quiz eight I received 7/10 on my first attempt. The question that confused me the most was number seven.

I thought by saying (Between **and**) in the question they meant the numbers read: Between 1914 and 18.

On second attempt I received 10/10.
