Week 11

Practical: Rewrite.

A woman, believed to be in her 30s, was caught under the train at Eagle Junction railway station just after 12pm Wednesday.

Emergency services reportedly freed the woman at 12.55pm.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the woman is currently conscious and has lower leg injuries, as four fire crews continue their rescue efforts.

QAS said the woman was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious condition.

The incident is said to affect the flow on rail commuters travelling through the region, with Airport and Doomben trains experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes.

Police said they are treating the incident as one of self-harm.

Inquiry: Week 11

What are the problems with the article?

The structure of the news article is repetitive and clearly out-of-order. Throughout the article it is evident that the article may have been updated, but with no time stamps it is hard to tell.

Does it meet the guidelines for reporting self-harm?

Mind Frame says ‘the media has an important role to play in shaping and reinforcing social attitudes towards, and perceptions of, suicide and mental illness.’

It is recommended that pages should limit promo on of public memorials, including online memorial pages. Because inadvertently pages should not reinforce suicide as a desired outcome for people at risk of suicide.

Reporters should try and reduce the prominence of the story. This is based on research suggesting stories of self-harm attract the attention of people vulnerable to act in the same way, increasing their risk of attempts.

I believe that the article has met the guidelines for reporting self-harm.

Technical: Complete Quiz 11

Style was the topic of quiz 11. The blog task sheet we were given this week said to read chapter 11 of Hicks english for journalists. I am fairly certain they meant Chapter 8, as 8 relates to style and 11 relates to figures.

Anyway, I read chapter 8 and received 9/10! That is my best score yet. Question 10 was the wrong answer, it was a simple true or false. I guessed the answer, and surprise! I got it wrong.

I really enjoyed reading about style, and I believe that as I have progressed through this course I have developed my own writing style.
